There’s no shortage of mindfulness and meditation apps these days, promising to help you combat anxiety, sleep better, hone your focus, and more. We scoured the app stores to find the most popular, educational, and easy-to-use mindfulness apps that are available.

01

Calm – 7/10

Calm immediately makes you into feel relaxed with the cool natural sounds of the ‘mountain lake’ backdrop (you can choose different serene settings). There are 19 exercises to choose that all come with a separate monthly fee. Compared with the 8 free meditations that offer guided & unguided exercises you can chose between 3-30min practices. There is the option of reminders and they provide inspiring quotes at the end of each practice. The free exercises offer all you need so you don’t need to spend money here. The woman’s accent is also quite soft which I suspect many will warm too.

Cost: Free for the basics.

Mindfulness Daily – 8/10.

This App has all the bells and whistles when it comes to a mindfulness App. Good graphics, a range of different breathing practices and reminders set throughout the day to enhance your attention inward. There are 22 practices that range from silent breathing, body scanning and TED discussions to expand your insight. If you don’t mind a strong female American accent guiding you through you mediations this App takes the cake when looking for value for money.

Cost: $2.99

Stop, Breathe and Think – Meditation and Mindfulness – 5/10

These developers have taken a customised approach of choosing how to meditate. You are at first asked to describe your mood (there is a long list and this can take up a bit of time) then they recommend practices. Sweet yes however you are then stuck with limited exercises unless you ‘go premium’. I will give credit for the education provided about mindfulness however the deliverables in terms of exercises falls short.

Headspace: Guided Meditation and Mindfulness – 4/10

Headspace have put a lot of effort into this App, creating approachable, interactive education. The immediate change you notice is the English male accent that would come as a relief from the American tones. There are many topic areas to choose from such as; sport, health, relationships, performance, sleep and cooking (yes an exercise while you bake). They come in 3-10 packs of meditation practices. The marketing is done very well, you feel as though you are invested in quite a lot education, however once you get past the interactive graphics I would suspect you would soon tire of the exercises + monthly fee.

Cost: $9.99 a month (cancel anytime); $12.50 (12month contract); $599.99 Forever

Smiling Mind – 9/10

This App has been developed by a non-for- profit organisation and has been influenced by a range of psychologists (whoo hoo). They offer a broad number of practices for children, teens and adults. All exercises are guided with male voice, unlike all others. All you need is to subscribe and you can access ALL of their exercises. There are no fancy sounds or background images, but in terms of education and value – they deliver. Cost: Free.
